In light of the recent announcement from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, that it plans to end the province-wide Slots at Racetracks program in March 2013, the following two and a half minute video was created to illustrate the wide range of people who will be dramatically affected by this decision. Super Ninety Nine rolled to an 11 1/4-length win in the $300000 Southwest Stakes (gr. III) Feb. 18 for Susan and Charles Chu’s Tanma Corporation, muddling the 3-year-old picture even more as the top three finishers from the Smarty Jones Stakes finished off the board at Oaklawn Park. First is a clip of the “head-on” camera shot, which clearly shows three maintenance workers diving as they realize the field is about to trample them. Notice the bucket that they leave on the course. The second part is the full race. At the 2:29 mark, you can see where the maintenance workers scramble, but it’s not nearly as clear as the head-on shot. One of the surprising highlights of our road trip to Prince Edward Island, Canada was the evening we spent at the Charlottetown racetrack as “owners” of a race horse. We toured the stables, talked to the drivers, had an amazing meal and perhaps – you’ll have to watch to find out – stepped into the winners circle. I even got a chance to sit with the starting judge in the mobile gate.
