Date: August 19, 2004 Track: Del Mar I’m happy to report no one was hurt. There are two parts to this video. First is a clip of the “head-on” camera shot, which clearly shows three maintenance workers diving as they realize the field is about to trample them. Notice the bucket that they leave on the course. The second part is the full race. At the 2:29 mark, you can see where the maintenance workers scramble, but it’s not nearly as clear as the head-on shot. From Steve Andersen’s report in the Daily Racing Form: “Three members of the Del [More]

It was the day of sweet revenge in racing: Louis Quatorze won the 121st Preakness Stakes with Pat Day riding, just 10 days after he was replaced as a jockey by trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who watched today while his record streak ended after six straight Triple Crown victories. Day was signed for his ride by Nick Zito, the most vocal critic of Lukas and his hordes of horses. And they scored the coup of the year when Louis Quatorze, 16th in the Kentucky Derby and fifth in the Preakness betting, led every step of the way to outrun Skip [More]
Sunday Silence, who raised more questions than he answered when he beat Easy Goer by two and a half lengths in the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago, proved himself a worthy Triple Crown contender today by winning the 114th and closest Preakness Stakes ever at Pimlico Race Course. The blackish colt from California raced head and head with Easy Goer for the length of the stretch before regaining the lead in the final yards to win by a long nose. The last time a Preakness was decided in a photo finish was when Affirmed held off Alydar by a neck [More]

History was set at Belmont Park Saturday but it was not Funny Cide becoming a Triple Crown winner. Instead, it was trainer Bobby Frankel winning his first Triple Crown race when his Empire Maker won the Belmont Stakes (gr. I). Ten Most Wanted was second and Funny Cide third. The New Yorkers were rooting for New York-bred Funny Cide. But a New York-bred did win the Belmont — Frankel was born in Brooklyn. Empire Maker ran second to Funny Cide in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I), and then skipped the Preakness Stakes (gr. I), which Funny Cide won easily. Empire [More]

It may not have been as exciting as Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction, but as Mary Rampelllini reported in the Daily Racing Form: The featured ninth race at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark., on Thursday was declared a no contest after the starting gate was unable to be pulled from the racetrack because of problems with a tractor. Wagers on the race were refunded, while bets tied into multiple races were given an “all” in the ninth race. “We had a tractor malfunction,” said David Longinotti, assistant general manager at Oaklawn. “We told it to go, and it wouldn’t go. This Race Horse was the first Film ever, filmed in 1878 by Edward Muybridge. Eadweard J. Muybridge (pronounced /ˌɛdwərd ˈmaɪbrɪdʒ/; 9 April 1830 — 8 May 1904) was an English photographer who spent much of his life in the United States. He is known for his pioneering work on animal locomotion which used multiple cameras to capture motion, and his zoopraxiscope, a device for projecting motion pictures that pre-dated the flexible perforated film strip. By 1878, Muybridge had successfully photographed a horse in fast motion. This series of photos taken in Palo Alto, California, is called Sallie Gardner at a [More]
For some reason I find oddities like this May 16, 2004 race very entertaining. The Hasta la Vista Handicap at Turf Paradise in Arizona is run at what today is an unusually long distance of 1 7/8 miles. This requires two full circuits of the course, rather than the usual one time around in most races. Unfortunately for jockey Jorge Carreno, he forgets that minor detail, creating a very unusual sitation. On a personal note, in the early 1980s, I recall Hall of Fame jockey Jorge Velasquez falling victim to the same mental lapse in the 2 1/4 mile Display [More]
