With a final burst of speed in the last few strides, Pleasant Colony added the 106th Preakness today to his Kentucky Derby victory and needs only the Belmont Stakes to become the l2th winner of thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown. Pleasant Colony surged to a one-length victory over Bold Ego, who had led from the start, as 74-1 Paristo, a supplemenatry nominee, finished third, two more lengths back. In 1973 after winning the Kentucky Derby in (still) record time, and winning the Preakness, Secretariat was about to become a legend, and only the Belmont Stakes stood in the way. One of the greatest moments in sports was about to take place, and perhaps the greatest race in history–enjoy Websters Dictionary defines the word “Perhaps” as follows- used as a Adverb: possibly but not certainly : maybe used as a Synonyms: conceivably, maybe, perchance, possibly- I am getting sick and tired of all that negative comments about the Video I posted because either they don’t read the dictionary very [More]

Union Rags, the co-favorite after Triple Crown contender I’ll Have Another was retired with an injury, won the Belmont Stakes. Union Rags finished seventh in the Kentucky Derby on May 5, his most recent race before today. I’ll Have Another won that race and the Preakness in Baltimore on May 19, the first two legs of the Triple Crown. Union Rags, ridden by John Velazquez and trained by Michael Matz, won the Belmont in two minutes, 30.42 seconds. It was a photo finish over Paynter, trained by Bob Baffert. Nothing slowed Point Given, the prohibitive 6-5 favorite, in the 133rd running of the Belmont Stakes yesterday. Not the rambunctious Dr Greenfield, whose reluctance to load in the starting gate delayed the race. Not a soft pace set by the lone speed horse, Balto Star. And not a hustling move on the far turn by AP Valentine, the New York horse from a New York trainer, or a late one by the Kentucky Derby winner, Monarchos, who is conditioned by a Kentucky trainer. When Point Given barreled into the stretch all alone, the 73857 people at this grand racetrack on [More]

Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom, the 5-2 favorite, fell back to last shortly after the start when he clipped heels with Mucho Macho Man, who was bumped by Isn’t He Perfect. As Louisville prepares for the 138th Kentucky Derby, horse racing in the US is under the spotlight over one its most controversial aspects. While there is big money for winners, every year thousands of under-performing thoroughbreds end up at the slaughterhouse. A total of 23 race horses either died or were injured on tracks across the US on the day of the competition last year. Now, a rescue centre is giving some lucky steeds a second chance. Al Jazeera’s Kimberly Halkett reports from Kentucky.
It was the day of sweet revenge in racing: Louis Quatorze won the 121st Preakness Stakes with Pat Day riding, just 10 days after he was replaced as a jockey by trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who watched today while his record streak ended after six straight Triple Crown victories. Day was signed for his ride by Nick Zito, the most vocal critic of Lukas and his hordes of horses. And they scored the coup of the year when Louis Quatorze, 16th in the Kentucky Derby and fifth in the Preakness betting, led every step of the way to outrun Skip [More]
Sunday Silence, who raised more questions than he answered when he beat Easy Goer by two and a half lengths in the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago, proved himself a worthy Triple Crown contender today by winning the 114th and closest Preakness Stakes ever at Pimlico Race Course. The blackish colt from California raced head and head with Easy Goer for the length of the stretch before regaining the lead in the final yards to win by a long nose. The last time a Preakness was decided in a photo finish was when Affirmed held off Alydar by a neck [More]
History was set at Belmont Park Saturday but it was not Funny Cide becoming a Triple Crown winner. Instead, it was trainer Bobby Frankel winning his first Triple Crown race when his Empire Maker won the Belmont Stakes (gr. I). Ten Most Wanted was second and Funny Cide third. The New Yorkers were rooting for New York-bred Funny Cide. But a New York-bred did win the Belmont — Frankel was born in Brooklyn. Empire Maker ran second to Funny Cide in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I), and then skipped the Preakness Stakes (gr. I), which Funny Cide won easily. Empire [More]
