Robert Evan’s Tonalist rallied late to edge Commissioner to win the June 7 Belmont Stakes (gr. I). California Chrome, bidding for the Triple Crown, finished in a dead-heat for fourth with Wicked Strong behind Medal Count. The 1 1/2-mile distance of the Belmont at Belmont Park has been “heartbreak highway” for 3-year-olds since Affirmed last won the Triple Crown 36 years ago in 1978. The time for the 12 furlongs was 2:28.52. Tonalist, a son of Tapit –Settling Mist, by Pleasant Colony, was bred in Kentucky by Woodslane Farm. In light of the recent announcement from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, that it plans to end the province-wide Slots at Racetracks program in March 2013, the following two and a half minute video was created to illustrate the wide range of people who will be dramatically affected by this decision. Of the more than 60000 people involved directly or indirectly with horse racing in Ontario, here are just a few of the individuals that make up the heartbeat of Ontario’s vital and valuable industry. Nothing slowed Point Given, the prohibitive 6-5 favorite, in the 133rd running of the Belmont Stakes yesterday. Not the rambunctious Dr Greenfield, whose reluctance to load in the starting gate delayed the race. Not a soft pace set by the lone speed horse, Balto Star. And not a hustling move on the far turn by AP Valentine, the New York horse from a New York trainer, or a late one by the Kentucky Derby winner, Monarchos, who is conditioned by a Kentucky trainer. When Point Given barreled into the stretch all alone, the 73857 people at this grand racetrack on [More]
Ruler On Ice, dismissed at 24-1, sat a perfect trip under a patient Jose Valdivia, Jr., taking the lead at the top of the stretch and holding off another longshot, Stay Thirsty, to win Saturday’s 143rd running of the Grade 1, $1 million Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park. Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom, the 5-2 favorite, fell back to last shortly after the start when he clipped heels with Mucho Macho Man, who was bumped by Isn’t He Perfect. Under jockey John Velazquez, who lost his left stirrup and didn’t regain it until the first turn, Animal Kingdom made a [More]
Black Caviar took her most positive step so far towards a return to racing with a surprise first public appearance for the year at Sandown on Tuesday morning. The unbeaten mare contested a jump-out, her first piece of serious racetrack competition since her famous Royal Ascot victory in June. Sitting deep from the start of the 800m contest, Black Caviar domimated the jump-out from the home turn as she put a space between herself and her rivals. “It was just a soft half-mile jump-out and I’m very happy with her,” trainer Peter Moody told AAP. “Like a pig in mud.
