Super Ninety Nine rolled to an 11 1/4-length win in the $300000 Southwest Stakes (gr. III) Feb. 18 for Susan and Charles Chu’s Tanma Corporation, muddling the 3-year-old picture even more as the top three finishers from the Smarty Jones Stakes finished off the board at Oaklawn Park. Conditioners of sophomores formerly in high regard at Oaklawn will likely blame track conditions for their sound defeat; the Arkansas oval dodged showers for much of the day, but the skies opened up 30 minutes before the featured race and the track was rated sloppy. That defeat, however, came at the hands [More]

Nothing slowed Point Given, the prohibitive 6-5 favorite, in the 133rd running of the Belmont Stakes yesterday. Not the rambunctious Dr Greenfield, whose reluctance to load in the starting gate delayed the race. Not a soft pace set by the lone speed horse, Balto Star. And not a hustling move on the far turn by AP Valentine, the New York horse from a New York trainer, or a late one by the Kentucky Derby winner, Monarchos, who is conditioned by a Kentucky trainer. When Point Given barreled into the stretch all alone, the 73857 people at this grand racetrack on [More]

I chose “Brazilian Wedding” at the Trainer’s Challenge. Every horse has a certain quality that just stands out for a first impression. For Brazilian it was her overall proportioned sleek look. When looking at her for a more detailed assessment, I liked her comfortable eye, big ears, and the fact she was on all four feet whenever standing. Though skinny after her let down after racing, she has the bone to bulk up some muscle for power. She also has a very feminine look without being dainty. After all, pretty is what pretty does. Black Caviar took her most positive step so far towards a return to racing with a surprise first public appearance for the year at Sandown on Tuesday morning. The unbeaten mare contested a jump-out, her first piece of serious racetrack competition since her famous Royal Ascot victory in June. Sitting deep from the start of the 800m contest, Black Caviar domimated the jump-out from the home turn as she put a space between herself and her rivals. “It was just a soft half-mile jump-out and I’m very happy with her,” trainer Peter Moody told AAP. “Like a pig in mud. History and the long, demanding stretch at Belmont Park had caught up with Spectacular Bid. With a short distance remaining in the Belmont Stakes last Saturday, he was leading, seemingly drawing away from his seven rivals. He was four lengths in front of 12-to-1 shot General Assembly and looking just as strong as he had while rattling off victories in 12 consecutive stakes races. Just 660 yards to go to the third Triple Crown in three years. But then Spectacular Bid began to behave like a very fat man trying to run up a very steep hill. In the stretch [More]
It was the day of sweet revenge in racing: Louis Quatorze won the 121st Preakness Stakes with Pat Day riding, just 10 days after he was replaced as a jockey by trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who watched today while his record streak ended after six straight Triple Crown victories. Day was signed for his ride by Nick Zito, the most vocal critic of Lukas and his hordes of horses. And they scored the coup of the year when Louis Quatorze, 16th in the Kentucky Derby and fifth in the Preakness betting, led every step of the way to outrun Skip [More]
History was set at Belmont Park Saturday but it was not Funny Cide becoming a Triple Crown winner. Instead, it was trainer Bobby Frankel winning his first Triple Crown race when his Empire Maker won the Belmont Stakes (gr. I). Ten Most Wanted was second and Funny Cide third. The New Yorkers were rooting for New York-bred Funny Cide. But a New York-bred did win the Belmont — Frankel was born in Brooklyn. Empire Maker ran second to Funny Cide in the Kentucky Derby (gr. Foinavon Wins Grand National after Huge Pile Up Causes Race Shambles (1967). The 1967 Grand National was the scene of one the most notorious pile ups in Grand National history . Foinavon had odds of 100/1 to win the race. Even his owner Cyril Watkins did not bother to attend Aintree because the chances of a win were wholly improbable. As expected, Foinavon did not play a competitive part in the race until at the 23rd fence, a loose horse cut across the riders causing all the horses to either fall, unseat their riders or refuse to jump. Foinavon and [More]
