Robert Evan’s Tonalist rallied late to edge Commissioner to win the June 7 Belmont Stakes (gr. I). California Chrome, bidding for the Triple Crown, finished in a dead-heat for fourth with Wicked Strong behind Medal Count. The 1 1/2-mile distance of the Belmont at Belmont Park has been “heartbreak highway” for 3-year-olds since Affirmed last won the Triple Crown 36 years ago in 1978. The time for the 12 furlongs was 2:28.52. Tonalist, a son of Tapit –Settling Mist, by Pleasant Colony, was bred in Kentucky by Woodslane Farm. Date: August 19, 2004 Track: Del Mar I’m happy to report no one was hurt. There are two parts to this video. First is a clip of the “head-on” camera shot, which clearly shows three maintenance workers diving as they realize the field is about to trample them. Notice the bucket that they leave on the course. The second part is the full race. At the 2:29 mark, you can see where the maintenance workers scramble, but it’s not nearly as clear as the head-on shot. From Steve Andersen’s report in the Daily Racing Form: “Three members of the Del [More]
This video is meant to represent the racing legend Barbaro. His story is a sad one, seeing that he was a great racehorse with a lot of potential. He could’ve been great. But in his last race, he badly broke his right hind leg. Several treatments were tried, but the strain on the rest of his legs was too much to bear. I and several others had high hopes of his recovery, but Barbaro was in too much pain and was put down. I have some videos of him in here, but as with all horse race videos, the quality [More]

Colt by Bel Danoro from Minuette Bel Danoro is a young Group Stakes winning son of the mighty Danehill, and so impressed were we with the progeny of Bel Danoro that we purchased three of them, as we believe this young stallion possesses all of the attributes necessary to become a sire of Champions. ‘The History of Racing’ is the penultimate programme in the ‘Racing Explained’ series. In this programme we look back at Irish horse racing and see how it all began. We look at the history of one of the country’s most loved sports as well as the history and functions of the Turf Club and Horse Racing Ireland. The human relationship with horses has been represented in art for 30000 years and was first recorded in cave paintings, such as those in Lascaux in France. The nomadic tribesmen of Central Asia first tamed the horse in 4500BC. Horse racing was called [More]
Nothing slowed Point Given, the prohibitive 6-5 favorite, in the 133rd running of the Belmont Stakes yesterday. Not the rambunctious Dr Greenfield, whose reluctance to load in the starting gate delayed the race. Not a soft pace set by the lone speed horse, Balto Star. And not a hustling move on the far turn by AP Valentine, the New York horse from a New York trainer, or a late one by the Kentucky Derby winner, Monarchos, who is conditioned by a Kentucky trainer. When Point Given barreled into the stretch all alone, the 73857 people at this grand racetrack on [More]

As Louisville prepares for the 138th Kentucky Derby, horse racing in the US is under the spotlight over one its most controversial aspects. While there is big money for winners, every year thousands of under-performing thoroughbreds end up at the slaughterhouse. A total of 23 race horses either died or were injured on tracks across the US on the day of the competition last year. Now, a rescue centre is giving some lucky steeds a second chance. Al Jazeera’s Kimberly Halkett reports from Kentucky.

1. The idea that the agreement between the Ontario government and the horse racing industry is anything other than a partnership is offensive. At the expense of the racing industry, facilities were improved to accommodate slot parlors on behalf of the government — slot parlors that are in fact competition for an industry that had developed itself over many decades. The agreement, to this day, pours 75% of all slots revenue into Ontario government coffers, gives 5% to the municipalities where these facilities are located, and allots the remaining 20% to the industry. Industry money maintains jobs while providing a [More]
It was the day of sweet revenge in racing: Louis Quatorze won the 121st Preakness Stakes with Pat Day riding, just 10 days after he was replaced as a jockey by trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who watched today while his record streak ended after six straight Triple Crown victories. Day was signed for his ride by Nick Zito, the most vocal critic of Lukas and his hordes of horses. And they scored the coup of the year when Louis Quatorze, 16th in the Kentucky Derby and fifth in the Preakness betting, led every step of the way to outrun Skip [More]
Sunday Silence, who raised more questions than he answered when he beat Easy Goer by two and a half lengths in the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago, proved himself a worthy Triple Crown contender today by winning the 114th and closest Preakness Stakes ever at Pimlico Race Course. The blackish colt from California raced head and head with Easy Goer for the length of the stretch before regaining the lead in the final yards to win by a long nose. The last time a Preakness was decided in a photo finish was when Affirmed held off Alydar by a neck [More]
History was set at Belmont Park Saturday but it was not Funny Cide becoming a Triple Crown winner. Instead, it was trainer Bobby Frankel winning his first Triple Crown race when his Empire Maker won the Belmont Stakes (gr. I). Ten Most Wanted was second and Funny Cide third. The New Yorkers were rooting for New York-bred Funny Cide. But a New York-bred did win the Belmont — Frankel was born in Brooklyn. Empire Maker ran second to Funny Cide in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I), and then skipped the Preakness Stakes (gr. I), which Funny Cide won easily. Empire [More]
It may not have been as exciting as Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction, but as Mary Rampelllini reported in the Daily Racing Form: The featured ninth race at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark., on Thursday was declared a no contest after the starting gate was unable to be pulled from the racetrack because of problems with a tractor. Wagers on the race were refunded, while bets tied into multiple races were given an “all” in the ninth race. “We had a tractor malfunction,” said David Longinotti, assistant general manager at Oaklawn. “We told it to go, and it wouldn’t go. Foinavon Wins Grand National after Huge Pile Up Causes Race Shambles (1967). The 1967 Grand National was the scene of one the most notorious pile ups in Grand National history . Foinavon had odds of 100/1 to win the race. Even his owner Cyril Watkins did not bother to attend Aintree because the chances of a win were wholly improbable. As expected, Foinavon did not play a competitive part in the race until at the 23rd fence, a loose horse cut across the riders causing all the horses to either fall, unseat their riders or refuse to jump.
